A Classical Education: Back to the Future

This opinion piece was written by Stanley Fish and printed in the NYT on June 7.  Great explanation of classical education and its significance in the modern world.  Good discussion in the comments also!

Chris Perrin responded to Fish's piece with an essay of his own that points out although Fish is an ally of classical education he is lacking one important element in his educational foundation.

  1. Jesse and I read both articles last night and enjoyed discussing them. Fish's list of required and offered subjects at The Classical School in RI led me to a hard conclusion. :) Only eunuchs should be hired at schools so aggressive and advanced as that one. The burden shouldered by teachers at such a school must be tremendous. Then Jesse reminded me that classical teachers really were mostly celibate in the middle ages. So now I feel good, having landed upon the same insight as the Old Sages themselves. :) It is a vital piece of info missing from most explanations of classical education. One that should be taken into consideration in our modern world as we think about going back to the future. :)
